END OF YEAR 2006 MESSAGE

With 2006 now in the history books and a new year facing us, I would like to mention a few things that happened in New Brunswick bodybuilding & figure this past year that I think are worth mentioning.

Of course I have to start with the New Brunswick Bodybuilding & Figure Championship held this past fall in Fredericton! Wow, what a show! I confess that I was overwhelmed by the support shown by fans, athletes and sponsors in making the championships the success it was. When I was faced with the task of organizing this year’s competition, I was very skeptical as to how well it would work in Fredericton. I remember back in 1989, which was the last time we had it here, an audience of only about 250 showed up.

Believing that we would see a better crowd in Moncton, it was moved to that city the following year.

The past seventeen years in Moncton have been great for New Brunswick Bodybuilding as many memorable battles transpired at one or another of the four schools we used for the shows.

With long time President Len Collette stepping down, and taking over as President, I had a big challenge facing me. My first task was making sure that we would have the 2006 New Brunswick Bodybuilding & Figure Championships. Of course living in Fredericton provided me with the opportunity to bring the N.B. Championships back to the capital city where promoting the show would be much easier for me than doing it in another city.

Many things have changed in seventeen years, and a big part of this year’s success can be credited to the interest in the new Figure competition which has almost replaced women’s bodybuilding. Back in the seventies, eighties and early nineties, the show’s success relied on bodybuilding only. If the numbers were low then the competition struggled to provide the kind of response and support necessary to make it a success. In reality, numbers in bodybuilding have not grown that much in twenty years. Fortunately, as each year passes, interest in figure competitions continues to grow.
Thanks to the tremendous support and positive response from those involved at this year’s provincials, I am very encouraged and dedicating my efforts to improving our competitions for 2007. I want New Brunswick competitions to be fun, not only for the athlete, but also for fans, sponsors and everyone involved.

I am very pleased to announce that five-time Canadian Bodybuilding Champion Ti-Jean LeBlanc & New Brunswick Figure Class winner Heather Ward will be promoting the 2007 Atlantic Bodybuilding & Figure Championships in Moncton on May 19th. Through Len’s dedicated efforts, the Atlantic Championships have always marked the beginning to a great competitive season with athletes traveling to Moncton from all over the Atlantic region. I will be working closely with Jean & Heather to make sure that the tradition will continue. We are hoping that this will be one of the most exciting Atlantics to date. Already interest is keen. In fact we have made some changes in the 2007 show to reflect the growing interest in Figure. Along with the three regular height classes, we will be adding a women’s Figure Masters class for those over the age of 35. Keep checking out our website for updates and information on the competition.
I have already begun preparations on the 2007 New Brunswick bodybuilding & figure Championships. It is scheduled for November 10th at the Playhouse in Fredericton. I am working hard to make it bigger and better than the 2006 event. The 2007 championships are just under a year away so why not motivate yourself into getting in the best shape of your life with the goal of competing next fall!

For our sport to grow, I think we have to present more opportunities for those who might be interested in competing. Following are a few changes for 2007 that we feel may offer that opportunity.

CHANGES IN NEW BRUNSWICK COMPETITIONS FOR 2007

NEW: MEN’S CLASSIC PHYSIQUE CATEGORY

This new class will be added to the 2007 New Brunswick Championships and will be judged on a weight to height ratio, with the emphasis on symmetry, proportion, shape and muscularity. We are not looking for size and mass, but a more esthetically pleasing physique, much along the lines of former Mr. Olympia Frank Zane’s memorable development.

Proposed weight to height combinations are as follows:

5’2” Up to 130 lbs
5’3” Up to 135 lbs
5’4” Up to 140 lbs
5’5” Up to 145 lbs
5’6” Up to 150 lbs
5’7” Up to 155 lbs
5’8” Up to 165 lbs
5’9” Up to 170 lbs
5’10” Up to 175 lbs
5’11” Up to 180 lbs
6’0” Up to 190 lbs
6’1” Up to 200 lbs
6’2” Up to 210 lbs
6’3” Up to 220 lbs

We acknowledge that taller athletes have a more difficult time filling out their larger frames with more mass required to balance off the height weight ratio chart than with a shorter competitor. To allow for this, an additional five pounds has been added to the chart for those over 5’11”.

*Note: All competitors up to five feet ten inches will be allowed a 2 ½ pound increment per half inch. Example if you are 5’5 ½ ’’ then you will be allowed to weight up to 147 ½ pounds.

All competitors over five feet ten inches will be allowed a 5 pound increment per half inch. Example if you are 6’ ½ “ then you will be allowed to weight up to 195 pounds.

NEW: MASTER’S FIGURE (35 and over)
Due to the support and interest we have seen from some of the older figure athletes in the past several shows, a Masters Women’s figure category will be added for the 2007 Atlantic’s and New Brunswick Championships. There will be only one class for all athletes regardless of height.

CHANGE: WOMEN’S BODYBUILDING
For the past several contests the turnout for women’s bodybuilding has been very disappointing. Often, there is only a single competitor in a class. The result is a competitively poor class that does not provide sponsors and fans with the kind of support they were hoping for. As well, I’m sure the competitors are disappointed that they have no one to compete against. Beginning with the 2007 Atlantics, only one Women’s Bodybuilding category will be held. Should sufficient numbers begin to present themselves to again support several classes, we will review this policy.

As President of the NBPFA I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have some other ideas and suggestions to improve our provincial events. So don’t be afraid to get in touch!

I wish you all the best for the New Year! Enjoy all those tasty festive treats, but beginning in 2007, make the commitment to get your butt to the gym. Who knows, you could be standing on stage as a competitor at next fall’s provincial championships.
